The
English Association has been one of the most active bodies
in the illustrious history of Jai Hind College. Initiated
shortly after the college’s own inception, the Association
has played its role in thrusting the college to the pinnacles
of success incredibly well. Although the Association organises
myriad events in the course of each academic year, there are
a few of those which remain constant every year. The Association
kicks off every academic year with at least two talks from
renowned personalities from the literature realm. Towards
the end of the year, between December and January, is the
annual play which also plays host to the launch of the English
departmental magazine and is received with brilliant popularity
year after year. Apart from these constants, the EA (as it
is lovingly called) organises many other events throughout
the year to hone the literary talents of the students.

| i)
The English Association Writing Contest: For the
first time, EA organised and successfully executed a writing
competition which was held on 10th July 2009. The participants
were allotted highly innovative topics to write on., namely;
(a) A Torn Piece of Paper from my Diary, (b) Current Affairs,
(c) Youth Issues, (d) Fidelity: A Matter of Choice or Values
and, (e) Anything of your choice. The EA believes that literary
genius cannot be tapped or judged within an hour and hence
gave the participants a period of 3 days to submit their entries.
The prize winning entries received a certificate and the assurance
that their articles would appear in the EA magazine, unedited! |
ii)
Drama Workshop: On the 24th of July, 2009, EA invited
noted theatre personality, Mr. Argya Lahiri to conduct a four
hour drama workshop during which he dispensed invaluable knowledge
about the various elements of theatre and acting. It was a
pretty boisterous event, as Mr. Lahiri made the participants
of the workshop enter into a number of fun exercises and games
to furnish their theatrical techniques. The students were
given certificates of participation later on for the same. |
iii)
Talk by Namita Devidayal: 17th September 2009 witnessed
the first of the afore mentioned two talks by Ms. Namita Devidayal,
celebrated author of ‘The Music Room’ who enlightened
the students on the immense hard work that goes into writing
a novel and gave interesting insights into the exciting world
of serious and worthwhile music and the relationship it has
with the process of writing. |
