Department of Economics (BA)

The Department of Economics serves both Commerce and Humanities students, offering full majors to top performers in the final year. The curriculum includes nine Economics papers at the BA level and three Business Economics papers at the BCom level. Graduates often continue their studies at prestigious institutions and secure placements at top companies like CitiBank, Google, and Ernst & Young, as well as NGOs like Teach for India, excelling in diverse fields such as finance, research, and social services.

Sarita Jaishankar, with a postgraduate degree from the Delhi School of Economics, found her passion for teaching at the University of Delhi. She believes in teaching as a form of learning and sees youth as a source of inspiration. Currently, she is the Academic Head (Exam), co-head of Criterion 1 of the IQAC team, and a member of the Steering Committee for Autonomy & NEP and the Academic Consultants Committee at MDAE.

I have had the privilege of heading the Department of Economics for the past 10 years now and I have witnessed the phenomenal growth that we have made as a department. Our four-member faculty team has always strived to bring out the best in our students and today we are very proud of the achievements of our students in all fields. Our students have broken records and set higher & higher benchmarks, be it in academics or in the corporate world; at research or in the domain of social service. There is immense potential in the field of economics, and we as a department.

Arthanomics

Arthanomics is a major annual business and economics event featuring mock stock exchanges, research presentations, and technology-focused activities. It includes international participation and online adaptations, with CSR initiatives supporting educational and welfare causes.

Annual Economics Symposium

The Annual Economics Symposium showcases student research, hosts panel discussions, and features webinars on current economic issues, providing a platform for in-depth learning and engagement.

The Contrarian

The Contrarian is a student-led platform publishing articles, newsletters, and podcasts on economics and finance. It collaborates with events like Arthanomics and offers workshops to enhance student’s skills and knowledge.

Students Achievements

From 2018 to 2022, our Economics students achieved significant milestones, including winning the International Economics Convention and the Haresh A. Lakhani Trophy in 2018. They secured top prizes at the All India Young Economics Research Competition in 2019 and excelled at Discidium and Econvista. They also won the National Economic Forum in 2020 and first place at Acropolis in 2022. Additionally, Esha Gupta and Vidhi Dhoot's paper on "The Economics of Loneliness" was published by Harvard Economics Review.
